DARPA Network Challenge Topic on Baduku.com

So Last night I saw on the Rachel Maddow show that there was going to be this thing called the DARPA Network Challenge today where DARPA will launch 10 Balloons through out the country and the first to correctly submit all 10 geolocations for the balloons will get $40,000. Supposedly there are teams already working on it may are schools and others are charities. This I thought was the perfect place to test out Baduku in a real world scenario. Since people are supposedly also sharing misinformation that make this all the more challenging. Hopefully Baduku will weed out the fakes using consensus since people aren’t going to verify the same fake location as often. Well, lets see how it works, We created a temporary invitation code for this event Read more

New Features and Dec 15th Invitations

Baduku will be opening up the website to the public for viewing on December 15th 2009. While creating new topic and giving opinions on topics will still be limited to registered users, we will be issuing a special invitation code open to 5000 users on a first come, first serve, basis.

Also in preparation for this limited public launch, we have implemented a number of new features including the following:

Commenting
Registered users can now add a comment to any topic, similar to blogs in style and function and is limited to 250 characters each. We know a part of you feels your votes are just a small discreet voice that affect the whole but sometimes you may want to say more, even fight to affect the public opinion, then this is the way for you to communicate your feelings to the public.

Date Ranging:
One of Baduku’s most unique and anticipated features is our date ranging feature which allows users to adjust the date range for a topic. This allows users to view only the opinions that were collected within a particular date range. This could be as inclusive as over the entire lifetime of a topic, or simply the last week. As a research tool users can also few public opinion for a topic as it was one year ago, as a comparison tool for how opinions have evolve over time.

Future Features to come:
Here are few of the features that we’ll be releasing on December 15th. Read more

Feature Updates

New features recently added to Baduku.

Show More Opinions
This feature allows you to reveal a list of all opinions that have been collected for an topic in addition to the top 5. This list continues the top 5 list and is ranked by order of consensus. This available as an additional reference for when the top 5 opinions just aren’t enough for you to make a clear decision.

Scoring
This new feature requires users to specify whether they feel the topic overall was “good” or “bad”. The results are calculated and is available as a popup on the tool bar for any topic. The score tool helps users give a quick overview of the overall stance by topic contributors.

Social Networks
We’ve added links to our social network pages on Facebook, Myspace and Twitter so feel free to join us or become a fan of any of our social network resources. We appreciate all your support.

Alpha Launch Q&A

We know many of you are already asking question about how things work and have suggestions about how things should work. So we are going to list a few of them here so that it hopefully answers some of the question you have about the website.

Uploaded images are cropped all weird
For our alpha launch, we have a simple image upload tool that just crops the uploaded image by the longest side to make it a perfect square. We know this sucks when it cuts off the images weird so don’t worry, we have been working on a tool that lets you edit the image before it uploads. The new tool will let you resize the images crop area and move it around the image until you are happy with how it will be cropped. Then you can submit a perfect square shaped image.

Uploading Images from desktop sucks
Yea we know it a huge hassle to download images and then upload it so we are working on feature that works just like the “share link” feature on Facebook. The way it works is that when you put a URL link in when creating a topic, the system will automatically search that link for images and then compile them into the image preview window with arrows that will let you scroll through the images until you find the one you like. Official Private Alpha Launch

Baduku.com’s official private alpha website launched on November 16th 2009. We are excited about the launch and hope that everyone enjoys using the site as much as we do. As you will see, its super easy to use baduku.com to start creating new topics or giving your opinion to existing topics.

Bugs-O-Plenty
Of course we expect there will be bugs along the way and we will try to fix them as soon as we become aware of them so don’t ever hesitate to share with us the bugs you find along the way.

A Work In Progress
Also please remember that the website is still in it’s alpha stage so it is about halfway through full development and there are plenty of features we have yet to implement, half of which you are probably already thinking about so don’t hesitate to give send us any ideas you come up with for making baduku.com a better and more enjoyable website.

How You Can Help
Creating new topics and giving your opinions to existing topics is what we needs most right now. Especially with both the Black Friday Sales and Christmas Shopping Season coming up, we think this site can be a great resource to help us and our friends learn more about stuff we hope to buy in the next month. That’s why the best thing to start writing about is stuff you just bought for yourself or for others, or stuff you want to get in the near future. For example I’d love to hear what people think about the Amazon Kindle vs the Barnes and Noble Nook.

Another great and easy thing to write about is stuff you own and care about like your cell phone, car, tv shows, books, etc. You’d be amazed how fast it grows, we asked a few friends to write about their current and past cell phones and in a few hours we had nearly every cell phone on the current market, that’s pretty amazing in my opinion. So as you can see the power of our friends can make huge contributions with very little effort in record speed.

We just want to say thank you and let you know how much we appreciate all the support you are giving us during this Alpha launch and to let you know how invaluable your input is to us.
